Dick Nurse, Ruth Gage, and Janet Gardner in 2017

On Saturday, October 22, 2022, Princeton Friends Meeting will celebrate the activist life of the late Ruth Gage. Friends will gather in the historic Meeting House off Mercer Street at 2:00 pm.

Dr. Gage was born in 1925 in Trenton, NJ, to Eugene and Marion Grannis, and died on August 20, 2022, after a brief illness. She held an MSN from the University of Pennsylvania in psychiatric nursing, and a PhD in counseling psychology from Seton Hall University. She enjoyed a long career as an assistant professor at Seton Hall and Rutgers University College of Nursing, and as a psychiatrist and family therapist.

Dr. Ruth Gage is a featured player in Quakers: The Quiet Revolutionaries. President Nixon had proudly referred to himself as a “birthright” Quaker because of his mother’s membership. Ruth chose to correct that. She raised her voice as she drew the microphone close and announced, “He was the ‘bombing Quaker,’ and I don’t think that’s very Quakerly.” In addition, she sent a copy of the Quaker Peace Testimony to him at the White House every single day he was in office.

Since May 2020, Quakers: The Quiet Revolutionaries has been broadcast
to over 250,000 households nationwide
